Eklavya: Complete Story from Devotion to Tragic End
The story of Eklavya is that of loyalty, sacrifice, and heartbreaking loss within the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata. 1. Early Life and Aspirations of Eklavya
However, he was born to Hiranyadhanu who was a chief of the Nishadas, forest dwellers mostly ostracised and considered as less respectable than royal families. Eklavya's aspiration to be an excellent warrior was inspired by the folk tales of the great archers of his time. Most probably, he was destined to lead, for Eklavya, born in any other rank, would have been exceptional enough to break all the shackles set upon him.
Eklavya realized that for his dreams to take place, he needed a guru. When Dronacharya was therefore thought to be the greatest archery teacher of all who taught the prince of the Kuru dynasty which included Arjuna with his skill in archery, Eklavya wanted to learn from the best and had gone out to reach Dronacharya.
2. The Encounter with Dronacharya
Eklavya sought Dronacharya and asked for him to be his guru. But Dronacharya was obliged to the royal authority and had promised his complete loyalty to the Kuru princes. In addition, he realized that being a guru to a tribesman would not be welcomed by the palace. So he rejected Eklavya's request.
Eklavya was defeated but not demoralized. He did not lose hope. For the intense desire to learn, Eklavya offered to honour Dronacharya as his guru even if he could not become his student formally.
3. Self-Taught Disciple
Unfazed by the spurning, Eklavya returned to the woods and made a clay image of Dronacharya. In front of this image, he would stand every day practicing his bow and arrow, visualizing Dronacharya standing there instructing him.
With simple uncompromising dedication and persistence, Eklavya polished his craft into one of superb genius. In his own way, he emerged as one of the finest archers in the land-all without instruction.
4. Testing Eklavya's Skills
Once, one day while Dronacharya was out in the forest with the Kuru princes, their dog ran ahead and began barking at something apparently unseen. Soon the dog returned silently, his mouth full of arrows, though he was not hurt at all. The troop was much intrigued by this. They pursued the trail and found Eklavya standing with his bow. This impressive display of skill left everyone stunned, especially Arjuna, who was considered Dronacharya's most skilled student.
Seeing Eklavya master the art, Arjuna felt a bit jealous owing to the fear of rivalry, and that somehow or the other he may be surpassed by someone else. He begged Dronacharya not to forget his promise of making Arjuna the most expert archer in the world.
5. The Guru Dakshina
Being confronted by this dilemma, Dronacharya was in a dilemma. He knew Eklavya regarded him as his guru and hence asked for guru dakshina from him, that is, the token of gratitude given by the disciple to his guru. But what Dronacharya demanded was something quite unusual: he wanted the thumb of Eklavya's right hand-the digit by which he would be unable to continue his archery lessons.
None could raise any doubt, and with full respect towards his guru, Eklavya cut off his thumb and presented the same to Dronacharya. Even though he knew that this would have put an end to his career as an archer forever, Eklavya did not raise even a single question and demonstrated the most extreme loyalty and sacrifice.
This act left a long-term impression on the minds of all those who witnessed it since Eklavya gave up something he lived for so long.
6. Life After Sacrifice
He was not completely vanquished due to the loss of one of his thumbs; he still practised archery with the other fingers. His skills were not the same, but at least he could still hold some comfort in being an excellent archer. After all, Eklavya could not be the best in the world again. His pride and sense of achievement still followed him along; he would still be a good outsider and serve his tribe with a brave heart.
7. Eklavya dies
This is not the end to the story of Eklavya as a sacrifice. Sometime later, he came out as a great warrior and an excellent charioteer in the army of King Jarasandha, a mighty and powerful ruler, who opposed the Pandavas and Krishna. Despite being injured, the skills of Eklavya in war were no less than extraordinary and had turned him into a cause for concern for the princes of Kuru.
He had been secretly supporting the enemies of the Pandavas during the Kurukshetra War. Still, Eklavya himself had grounds to grudge the Kuru dynasty who treated him shabbily; still, his life story was tragically ended. He was killed by Krishna at one of the battles where Eklavya was posed as a threat to the Pandavas. This was a life that has chosen suffering and loyalty, sacrificing in it all.

Eklavya's story is one of the most mysterious stories in Mahabharata- it embodies all the significant issues of dedication, caste bounds, and limitation of loyalty.
